Learn about Romantic music with a local conductor and professor.
Have you ever heard someone say, “That music is SO romantic!”? What does that mean? Is it music that is sappy and ooey-gooey? Is it music associated with a special time or event in our lives? Does it include a story? Interestingly, in Western music history, an entire era – essentially the nineteenth century – is typically categorized as being "Romantic." Really? An entire era? This interactive lecture will discuss various characteristics of music from the Romantic Era, and we’ll explore reasons why the term "Romantic" has been consistently applied to this music. Then we’ll compare the qualities of nineteenth-century Romanticism with our contemporary interpretations and see how they stack up.
Michael Gesme is the conductor of the Central Oregon Symphony and a Professor of Music at Central Oregon Community College where he teaches courses in Music Theory, Music History, Ear Training, and Conducting. He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, and a Masters of Music Degree in Orchestral Conducting from the University of Missouri-Columbia. Gesme also conducts the Cascade Winds Symphonic Band, the Central Oregon Chamber Orchestra and various productions for OperaBend.
