Unsung Heroes: Birds and War

A birds-eye perspective on feathered heroes.

Inspired by her grandfather's service in the trenches of the Western Front in World War I, Sevilla explores some of roles birds have played in armed conflicts.  

Bird song heard between bombs and gunfire has raised the spirits of troops.  Some birds have medals and war memorials for saving soldiers' lives.  Birds have been used as weapons, shields, spies, messengers, and even mine and submarine detectors.  Bird watching through barbed wire fencing offered meaning in times of despair and hardship for prisoners of war and holocaust survivors.   

This program offers a birds-eye perspective on some feathered heroes who accompanied our veteran heroes on the front lines.
