Join Gabriann “Abby” Hall for a discussion of the Klamath River system through historical and cultural lenses, culminating in the removal of four dams along its course. Hall will explore the longstanding significance of water and fish—including c’waam, koptu, and salmon—to the Klamath people, along with the complex water issues that have shaped the Klamath Basin. The discussion will trace the decades-long fight for dam removal, the removal process, and the return of salmon to waters where they had been absent for generations. Hall will also share the story of Tribal youth participating in the first descent of the newly undammed Klamath River and consider what comes next for the river and its ecosystem.

Drawing on her perspective as a member of the Klamath Tribes, Hall will explore the relationships among people, water, land, and First Foods and how these connections extend far beyond the concept of natural resources. Through Indigenous perspectives on stewardship and responsibility, the presentation will consider the broader meaning of restoration—one that includes not only the health of the river, but also cultural connections, Tribal communities, and responsibilities to generations yet to come.

About the presenter:

Gabriann “Abby” Hall is an enrolled member of the Klamath Tribes and an adjunct instructor at Central Oregon Community College, where she teaches Ethnic Studies and Native American Studies. She holds a bachelor's degree in Ethnic Studies, a master's degree in Interdisciplinary Studies, and a Master of Arts in Teaching from Oregon State University. Through teaching, public presentations, and oral storytelling, Hall works to share Native history and contemporary issues while highlighting the continued resilience, knowledge, and perspectives of Indigenous communities.
