Librarian Chandra vanEijnsbergen delves into our love of horror.
Do you love horror stories? Have you ever wondered why? Do people look at you oddly when you tell them your favorite book is The Shining or The Only Good Indian? Well, you're not alone. And you're not weird. There are good reasons we are drawn to the monstrous and terrifying. When Stephen King was asked why he would want to make up horrible things when there is so much real horror in the world, he said "we make up horror to help us cope with the real ones". (Danse Macabre, 1987). Reading or watching horror may not just be normal, it may actually be beneficial.
Join us for a talk about the meaning and importance of the horror genre and come away with a list of terrifyingly wonderful books to read.
Chandra vanEijnsbergen has worked for Deschutes Public Library for twenty-four years and is currently the Youth Services Supervisor. She has loved horror books and movies for as long as she can remember. Chandra blames her love of the terrifying on her father, who read her the original Grimm's Fairy tales as a child.
