Deschutes Public Library welcomes LCA staff to share a dynamic and informative workshop with community members who hope for a peaceful and inclusive community.

About workshop leader:
Joanne was born during a dictatorship and grew up in the aftermath of military occupation in Panama. Raised at her grandparents home, she learned from an early age about the power of each individual to impact their community. She graduated from high school in Panama City and moved to Dallas, Texas in 2000, where she studied English and psychology at Brookhaven Community College.
In 2010, Joanne moved to Bend and advocated for underrepresented communities at the Volunteers in Medicine clinic of the Cascades, Latino Community Association, Capaces Leadership Institute and more. She has served as a commissioner with the Oregon Commission on Hispanic Affairs, Bend's Human Rights and Equity Commission, and was a member of the 2020 Wildfire Recovery Council convened by Gov Kate Brown. Joanne lives with her two teen daughters. She has developed a love of poetry from her father. She continues to enjoy writing, daydreaming, and envisioning possibilities.
