What is the value of wilderness and how do we manage and protect these special places?  This presentation will take us through a brief history of the Wilderness Act and the evolution of wilderness areas in Central Oregon.  How have uses and expectations changed, and what does this mean for the preservation of wilderness character?  Finally, we'll talk about the development and implementation of a limited entry permit system for the Mt Jefferson, Three Sisters and Mt Washington wilderness areas, and how you can get a permit for the coming season.

The Deschutes National Forest encompasses nearly 1.6 million acres in central Oregon, offering year-round recreation opportunities.  Plan your visit at https://www.fs.usda.gov/r06/deschutes.  The Mount Jefferson, Mount Washington and Three Sisters Wilderness areas are home to iconic mountain peaks, high alpine meadows and lakes, and old growth forests. In an effort to preserve the natural beauty and wilderness experience for you and future visitors and to better manage recreation-related impacts, these areas are managed with use limits, or quotas, to ensure the protection of these landscapes now and into the future.  Get more information about permits at https://www.fs.usda.gov/r06/willamette/permits/central-cascades-wilderness-permits
